You are the key person in a talking therapy relationship, and so I feel you should be centre stage.  I provide sensitive, safe and practical help, tailored to your needs, your expectations and your budget, all to enable you in the process of making changes to how you cope day to day and long-term.  Often people know they need some help, but they don't really know what kind of help or don't know exactly why they need help.  They just know that they are feeling angry, sad, despairing, suicidal, guilty, or similar feelings.  Some people are trapped in situations that they do not know how they got into, or where they can't see a way out.  I work with individuals (aged 8 - 108+ years), couples, families or groups.

First Session:    The agenda for your first half price session with me is specifically for us to talk together so you can start setting your own goals for change.  In this session you can find out what is involved in any assessment, counselling or therapy.  Our first meeting takes place without any further commitment on your part.  Once you do make the decision to proceed with counselling, we can meet regularly in my discrete, private and comfortable clinic room, where at your own pace we will work out the causes of the challenges you are facing.  I work collaboratively with you in an atmosphere of warmth, empathy and respect, and together we select ways to resolve things that will work for you.  It is fundamental to how I work that in supporting you, that you achieve what you want from working with me, at your budget.
We can meet 7am-9pm most days.  I also offer psychological input by email or skype for people who are not able to meet face to face, and wish to access counselling support using the web, via various online communication services.

I've provided talking therapy (counselling, psychotherapy etc) since 1998, helping many people overcome difficulties including stress, anxiety, depression, bereavement, self esteem difficulties, in short all kinds of mental health issues.  I have experience of working with complex difficulties, such as personality disorder, and experiences of abuse (e.g. child abuse, domestic violence) to give you a few examples.

I hope you feel having read this that you have enough information here about me and how we will work together, that you want to contact me.  I will happily give you more information about me and how we can work in our first session.  Please feel free to email or call, and if you get my answer phone, please leave your name, a number and a suggested time to phone you back. Please also say whether it is alright for me to leave a message on your answering machine if you are not there when I return your call.

Psychology Tutorials: Degree AS A2 GCSE

Gill Hebb has been providing one-to one tutorial support to psychology students at AS, A2, GCSE and degree level since 1999. These tutorials are usually in addition to the timetabled lessons that individuals take, either as crash revision courses, or as on going weekly support to ensure that course work is completed, or that students are learning all the materials necessary, to a standard that they will pass, with the grade they want.

Gill has taught the AQA GCE A Level Psychology Syllabus A and B, and the GCSE Psychology syllabus, and can cover as good as all the modules in the course outline.

All levels of Psychology courses usually involve carrying out research projects. It is not unusual for students to find they wish to have personal tutorial support for this. Some want to know if the report is in the right format; others need help design the experiment; many need help with the data processing and statistics involved.

SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Scientists) is commonly used for social science or health research, and Gill has extensive experience of teaching this software and statistics (parametric and non-parametric, Anova, Regression, Factorial Analysis etc).

Often instead of tutorials, students ask for their research projects to be proof read. At A level, Degree level dissertations and Post graduate theses it can be reasuring to know that someone who has not been involved in the work can read and understand the assignment.

All tutorials take place in a private, comfortable setting in Roundhay, Leeds.

Rates for tutorial support are available on request from gill.hebb@btopenworld.com.

What is Transactional Analysis?

TA is an approach to psychotherapy. Transactional analysis defines the basic unit of social intercourse as a "transaction." There are three "ego states" from which transactions emanate-that of a "Parent", an "Adult", or a "Child." The transactions between individuals can be classified as complementary, crossed, simple or ulterior, based upon the response that an individual receives to a "transactional stimulus"- any action that consciously or unconsciously acknowledges the presence of other individuals. The transactional analysis framework has become a popular means of helping managers to assess the nature and effectiveness of their interpersonal behavior. By striving for more adult-to-adult transactions, managers may eliminate many of the "games people play."

Gill Hebb has trained at the Metanoia Institute (http://www.metanoia.ac.uk/) and has completed the required training in order to proceed to take her CTA (CERTIFIED TRANSACTIONAL ANALYST) examination in the next 18 months.

Gill uses Transactional Analysis (TA) in all areas of her work; psychotherapy, working in the field of dyslexia; teaching, training & development, etc.

Areas of need I deal with

Psychotherapy: What is it?

Psychotherapy describes a talking therapy used to treat many personal difficulties such as depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties and generally coming to terms with difficult situations and changes in your life. Psychotherapy involves talking to a licensed professional during a scheduled series of weekly appointments. Psychotherapy can be offered for a six sessions initially, in order to find out what the key issues are. Then if you want to carry on, the therapist will make a contract with you to work on the things you wish to change or solve. For some people this takes 6 months, but can in some cases take many years.

Gill takes clients who are struggling to deal with difficulties in all walks of life. Gill is a 'member' of the Health Professionals Council, British Psychological Society and the Institute of Transactional Analysis.

Dyslexia: Tutorial Support

Tutorial support for students with dyslexia involves helping to focus study skills on the tasks that the dyslexic student struggles with. It does not involve the tutor doing the work for the student.

In some cases, people who are dyslexic find it hard to think about, for instance, how to tackle an assignment or an essay without someone to talk the assignment through with. As a dyslexia tutor, Gill Hebb helps the dyslexic student to talk through the assignment, asking probing questions about what the students thoughts and opinions are about the assignment.

Further, someone who is dyslexic may find it hard to be able to write down their own thoughts on what the key components that the assignment requires of them. As a dyslexic tutor, Gill Hebb writes down the words the student uses to capture the students thoughts and opinions are about the assignment.

Distractability is a key component of dyslexia, and Gill Hebb also employs some 'project management' skills to help keep the dyslexic student on track. On occasions, this may seem to the student that they are being told to restrict their actions, but usually on reflection the student eventually becomes aware that the line of action they were taking was not pertinant to completing the assignment.

For others with dyslexia, it is sometimes necessary to review their revision strategies, essay writing skills, or note taking and organisation of their hours of study. All of these things are comprehensively addressed by Gill Hebb in Dyslexia Support Tutorials.

In this time of modern technology, it is possible to receive tutorial support to this end, using internet meeting rooms, and telephone, as well as face to face. I have worked with students in Tonbridge, Exeter, Manchester, Leeds, Bradford, Halifax, Wales, Oxford with great success.

Dyslexia: Get diagnosed

Psychological Assessments for all Specific Learning Difficulties (Dyslexia etc).

Psychometric tests or psychological assessments examine which knowledge, abilities, attitudes, and personality traits a person has.

Diagnostic assessment for dyslexia is an in-depth (3-4 hour) assessment designed to identify dyslexia and the pattern of individual strengths and weaknesses. The resulting detailed report helps to understand how an individual learns and gives recommendations for support. The types of support can include funding from Local Education Authorities in the form of Disabled Student Allowance.  Gill Hebb conducts assessments for people aged from 6 years to 85 years plus in a private clinic room set in Roundhay, Leeds.

Gill Hebb is an expert in assessing Dyslexia and is approved by the British Psychological Society as a Chartered Psychologist (Educational specialism) to assess for Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and related Specific Learning Difficulties.
